About the Artist
Paolo Uccello was an early Italian Renaissance painter who lived from 1397 to 1475. Active in northern Italy, he had a deep interest in perspective and visual effects. Though sometimes regarded as an inventor of perspective, he was in fact an artist who painted a poetic, decorative world. His works, rich with color and gilding, carry forward the tradition of Gothic art. His signature work 'The Battle of San Romano' renders a historical event in a decorative manner, using perspective and foreshortening to bring vivid life to the picture plane.
