About the Artist

Eugène Delacroix was born in France in 1798 and died in 1863; he was a leading figure of French Romanticism. He led the Romantic movement in the 19th-century art world and developed a painting style that emphasized emotion and movement. Delacroix's works are characterized by intense color and lively composition, and tend to deal with historical and literary themes. One of his masterpieces, "The Death of Sardanapalus," is regarded as a work that shows the essence of Romanticism.
