About the Artist

Mary Cassatt was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania in 1844 and died in France in 1926, an Impressionist painter. She spent most of her adult life in France, associating with Impressionist painters such as Degas and taking part in their exhibitions. Her work addresses mainly women's daily lives and social roles, focusing in particular on the emotional relationship between mother and child. A leading woman painter of Impressionism, she was recognized alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot as one of the 'three great women' of the movement. Through her ties to the Havemeyer family, she also contributed to the reception of Impressionism in the United States.
