Käthe Kollwitz was a painter and printmaker born in Germany in 1867 and died in 1945. Associated with Expressionism, she was active mainly in Germany. Her work is renowned for depicting people suffering poverty and war with realism and deep emotion. Rendering the lives of the unfortunate in etching, lithography, and woodcut in particular, she raised awareness of social issues. Her art had a major influence on later politically engaged and Social Realist art.
