About the Artist
Caspar David Friedrich, born in Greifswald, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany in 1774 and died in 1840, was a painter. A leading figure of 19th-century German Romanticism, he brought to his paintings a view of nature as both the human spirit and divine creation. His work carries reflection on nature and emotion, marked by symbolic, anti-Classical elements. He depicted nature as a sacred presence through medievalizing landscape painting in particular, reflecting the spiritual shifts of his time. One of his signature works, 'Sea of Clouds,' symbolically expresses the grandeur of nature and the smallness of humanity.
