About the Artist
Carlos I was the 33rd King of Portugal, born in 1863 and died in 1908. The third monarch of the House of Braganza-Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, he is recorded as the first Portuguese monarch to die by violence. Adept in diplomacy and sometimes regarded as a victim of circumstance, he pursued political reform. His reign was marked by social reform and strengthened diplomatic relations. He pursued policies aimed at improving the lives of his people in particular, but ultimately met a violent end.
