Spanish painter (1591-1652)
About the Artist
Jusepe de Ribera was born in 1591 near Xàtiva, Valencia, Spain, and died in Italy in 1652. A leading Baroque artist, he was active in both Spain and Italy, working mainly in chiaroscuro. Known by the nickname 'Lo Spagnoletto,' he was also recognized as a key figure of the Spanish school. His artistic world is marked by an emphasis on realism and brutal depictions of martyrdom. In depicting female figures in particular, he combined a softer sweetness, showing a distinctive style. This reflects that he was the only Spanish-born painter of his time to achieve international popularity. Signature works include 'The Martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew' and 'Saint Agnes,' works that show his Realist approach and skill at conveying emotion.
