About the Artist
John Constable, born in Suffolk, England in 1776 and died in 1837, was a Realist landscape painter. Active during the Romantic era, he built a distinctive style through the realistic depiction of nature. Constable painted as if contemplating nature, valuing fine detail while striving to capture nature's essential truth. He exhibited annually at the Royal Academy after his admission, though it took a long time before he became a full member. Known as 'the cloud painter' for his close study of the sky and clouds in particular, he is regarded as a pioneer of painting en plein air.
