Jean-Léon Gérôme, born in 1824 and died in 1904, was a French painter and sculptor associated with Academicism. Active in Paris, he addressed a range of subjects including history painting and Orientalism. Gérôme's work is marked by refined technique and realistic depiction; his paintings were widely reproduced, and by the 1880s he was recognized as the most famous artist in the world. He is counted, alongside Meissonier and Cabanel, among the leading artists of France's Second Empire era.
