Edward Hopper

About the Artist

Edward Hopper was an American Realist painter born in New York in 1882 and died in 1967. Trained in art in New York, he began as an illustrator before exploring various artistic forms and establishing his own distinctive style. His artistic world centers on everyday urban scenes, expressing human solitude and alienation through refined lighting and composition. His paintings, which reflect well the American social atmosphere during World War I and the Great Depression in particular, are regarded as leading examples of American Realism. His art went on to influence Pop Art and Neo-Realist art.
