About the Artist
Duccio was an Italian painter active from 1255 to 1319, working mainly in Siena. A leading figure of the Sienese school, he is regarded as a contributor to the development of Western art. Duccio produced many important works commissioned by government and religious institutions, playing a key role in shaping the Trecento style and the Sienese school. His work is marked by a classical, refined style, laying the foundation for Sienese Gothic art. One of his signature works is a portrait of St. Mark held at Siena Cathedral.
