About the Artist
Cimabue, born around 1240 and died around 1302, was an Italian painter active in Florence. A leading figure of the Trecento era, he carried forward the tradition of Byzantine art while bringing naturalism and a sense of reality into his work. His art marked a turning point for Italian art of the time and had a major influence on later artists such as Giotto di Bondone. Signature works include the frescoes at the Basilica of San Francesco — 'Crucifixion,' 'Apocalypse,' and 'Madonna.'
