About the Artist
Vincent van Gogh was born in the Netherlands in 1853 and died in 1890; he was a Post-Impressionist painter. He left behind about 2,100 works of art during his lifetime, of which about 860 were oil paintings. His body of work is characterized by bold color and vigorous brushwork, and covers various subjects such as landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. In particular, his work had an important influence on the development of Expressionism in modern art. Van Gogh received little attention during his lifetime, but his artistic insight and depth of emotion had a great influence on later generations.
