About the Artist

Anthony van Dyck was born in Flanders in 1599 and died in 1641, a painter of the Baroque era. He worked as a pupil and assistant to Rubens, and during his study in Italy he was deeply influenced by the art of Titian and Veronese. His work is marked by soft composition and beautiful color, addressing both religious and mythological themes as well as portraiture. Working as court painter to Charles I in England in particular, he left behind more than 200 portraits, with 'Portrait of Charles I' regarded as his signature work.
