Amrita Shergil

About the Artist

Amrita Sher-Gil, born in 1913 and died in 1941, was a Hungarian-Indian painter active during the Modernist period. Working between India and Europe, she is regarded as a pioneer of modern Indian art. Her artistic world centers on figure paintings of everyday life, marked by a style fusing tradition with modern elements. Her signature work, the 1932 oil painting 'Young Girls,' first brought her widespread attention. Her art had a major influence on later generations of Indian women painters, and her work is highly valued today.
